About

Villa Dragoni, and in particular its west tower, was built between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century on the first hills above Buttrio, along the road leading to Scacciapensieri. Even then, the ground-floor loggia was adorned with hunting-themed frescoes, traces of which can still be dated to that period.

During the seventeenth century the Bertolini family enlarged the residence and, between 1783 and 1803, entrusted its decoration to gifted Friulian painters: Francesco Chiarottini, Giovanni Battista Canal and artists of the Morelli school. This gave rise to the frescoed halls of the piano nobile, each with its own character: the Sala dei Putti, with its scenes of Roman history and allegories of the arts; the Sala Bucolica, populated with theatrical gardens and figures in eighteenth-century dress; the Sala delle Muse, dominated by Apollo on his solar chariot; and the Sala Egizia, with its illusory ruins and painted vistas.

The villa also lived through some of the twentieth century’s darker chapters: during the Second World War it was occupied first by German and then by American troops, who damaged part of the frescoes. On one wall of the Sala Egizia, sentences left by Italian soldiers departing for the Russian front can still be read today — a quiet trace of those years.

In 1985 Marina Danieli acquired the estate, and in 1995 began a careful restoration, lasting three years, that returned the frescoes to their original splendour while fully respecting the building’s history.

Today the villa is a family-run, women-led estate that welcomes guests for stays and retreats immersed in the quiet of the Friulian countryside, while also opening its doors for weddings, conferences and celebrations: a place where time slows down, inviting guests to rediscover the pleasure of dwelling unhurriedly in time and nature.
